6-Day Luxury Kenya Safari: Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli
Big cats on the Mara plains, then elephants beneath Kilimanjaro.
Elephants in the open with Kilimanjaro behind them. The most photographed view in Kenya, and it earns it.
Amboseli is small, flat and unusually easy to read. Herds move across open pan and marsh in full view, and the park has some of the last really large tusked bulls left in East Africa.
It pairs naturally with the Masai Mara or with Tsavo, and most itineraries give it two nights.
| Best time | June to October and January to February |
|---|---|
| Getting there | Four hour drive from Nairobi, or a short flight |
| Typical stay | Two nights |
| Known for | Big tusked elephants, views of Kilimanjaro |
Elephants feed in the marshes through the middle of the day when other parks go quiet.
The only place you are allowed out of the vehicle, and worth it at sunset.
Community-run visits in the group ranches around the park.
The dry months, June to October and January to February, concentrate animals around the swamps and give the clearest views of Kilimanjaro. The mountain is usually only visible in the first and last hours of the day.

Hot and dusty by day, cool at night. Amboseli sits at altitude on an old lake bed, so the dust is fine and gets into everything.

A small number of lodges inside the park and several good camps on the surrounding group ranches, which are quieter and support the communities that own the land.

Big cats on the Mara plains, then elephants beneath Kilimanjaro.
Elephants, highland forest, two Rift Valley lakes and the Mara, the widest cross-section of Kenya on this list.
A balanced week: elephants under Kilimanjaro, a walk through Hell Gate, and two nights in the Mara.
It can, and we run it, but it is a long day. One night in the park is far better if you can spare it.
