Grass to the horizon in every direction, and the largest land migration on earth moving through it all year.
The Serengeti is vast enough that where you sleep matters more than which park you book. The migration moves in a rough annual loop, and a camp that is perfectly placed in February is four hundred kilometres out of position in September.
We plan Serengeti stays around where the herds should be in your specific weeks, and we say clearly when the timing is uncertain.
| Best time | All year, the herds move seasonally |
|---|---|
| Getting there | Flight from Arusha, or a drive via Ngorongoro |
| Typical stay | Three to five nights |
| Known for | The migration, big cats, endless plains |
Calving in the south from January to March, the western corridor mid year, the north from August.
The Serengeti is the classic balloon flight and worth the early alarm.
Rock outcrops hold lion and leopard through the heat of the day.
There is no bad time, only different Serengetis. January to March for calving and predators in the south, June and July in the west, August to October in the north for the Mara River crossings.

Warm days, cool nights, long rains in April and May and short rains in November.

Permanent lodges in the central Seronera area, and mobile tented camps that move with the herds, which is what we usually recommend.

They are the same ecosystem. The Serengeti is far bigger and less crowded, the Mara has higher predator density in a smaller area. Many of our trips do both.
